Behaviour Change
Working with adolescents and youth to prevent transmission of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases requires a multi-pronged approach and cooperation between different organizations. Education and training and economic empowerment opportunities must complement health education in order to give hope and a reason for adolescents and youth to want to protect their health. Without a hopeful future, young people have no incentive to develop into healthy, self-reliant and empowered individuals.
Self-esteem is critical for confidence and competence. Feelings of worthiness, assurance and proficiency influence a person’s life in regard to personal aspirations, motivation, achievement potential and relationships. Without self-esteem and resilience, children, adolescents and youth have little reason to understand or appreciate that HIV/AIDS will have a negative impact on their future aspirations. A supportive community network based on healthy Psycho-social support is therefore critical to fostering healthy self-esteem.
What We Do
Sports
Sport cuts across barriers of class, nationality, politics and religion and is increasingly accepted as an effective tool through which to raise self-esteem, which in turn helps adolescents and youth to make healthy choices. With greater self-esteem these youth can maximize opportunities offered by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Government funds, and micro-finance organizations, and believe in their ability to create a better tomorrow.
HIV Education
Training and mentorship in coaching for primary and secondary school teachers
Teach The Teachers
RWMT provides annual training to all primary and secondary school sports teachers on the essential components of using sports as a means to educate adolescents and youth about HIV/AIDS. Teachers are shown how sport can be used to instil social responsibility, deliver HIV/AIDS awareness advice, and help develop self-esteem, pride, respect and teamwork in their students.
