AGROFORESTRY
Rafiki believes in building enhanced future well being through sustainable environmental and socio-economic development. For Rafiki, this means balancing the community’s nutritional and socio-economic needs and aspirations with environmental conservation so that goals are achieved in harmony with nature, and environmental resources are safeguarded for future generations.
Rafiki engages in agroforestry activities, both for the purpose of providing education and training to the community, as well as for income generation.
Training Rafiki's training activities focus on strengthening understanding and approaches on ways that families can sustainably use all available natural resources for improved farming and horticulture activities.
This includes:
- nutrient cycling between trees, animals - including dairy goats - and crops
- using local ecological knowledge to develop improved agroforestry management principles
- enhancement of tree species diversity
- coping mechanisms for climate variability
- tree-soil interactions in matching indigenous species to sites and systems
It is also about educating the community on making maximum use of water, waste water and all compost material.
Other
Rafiki compliments its agroforestry with tree nurseries and beekeeping, which support the agroforestry chain to increase pollination and forage in the area.
